Commentary

Right then, that is it from this one-sided affair where Kolkata Knight Riders brushed aside Rajasthan Royals. Now, we move our focus to the clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad where we can once again expect runs galore. That will begin on 27th March, Thursday at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), but as you know, you can join us early for all the build-up to the same. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Quinton de Kock is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his unbeaten 97-run knock. He says that it was nice to get the opportunity and make it count. Adds that he didn't face any challenges as he had a three months break since Christmas. Ends by saying that a couple of warm-up matches helped him get out there and do his thing.

The victorious captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, Ajinkya Rahane, says that they bowled the first six overs really well, and the middle overs were also crucial for them as their spinners did really good by picking up those wickets. Adds that this is the format where you want to give your players freedom to play their shots and they have good explosive batters in the team who can turn up on their given day. Mentions that Moeen bowled really well, and he didn’t say much to him. He is happy that all the players contributed to the team’s win. States that every season brings a different challenge and it is an opportunity for them to improve with each game.

The skipper of Rajasthan Royals, Riyan Parag, says that 170 could have been a good score on this pitch, and they wanted that, but he feels that the batting wasn’t that up to the mark. Adds that de Kock played really well and they tried to contain him in the middle overs but failed to do so. Mentions that the team wanted him to bat at number four and this year, they want him to bat at number four, so he is happy in being whatever the team wants from him and he wants to be professional for that. States that they have a young team and have a lot of talent in the group, and it is about having to click together, and they need just one match to show their talent. Concludes that they want to improve their mistakes when they go to Chennai and will try to put on a good performance.

Presentation Time ...

Moeen Ali is in for a quick chat. He says he was practising well and was ready for whenever the chance came, and also mentions it's hard to replace somebody like Sunil Narine, but he did well. Says that a few balls spun while others didn't, but it was a good pitch to bowl on. Mentions that this is a fun bunch and he just looks to learn at this age as well. Says that the team balance is too good and the overseas players are fierce as well. Concludes that facing the quality new bowlers was a tough task, and he hasn't done it after the Ashes.

Rajasthan Royals will be disappointed with their bowling performance, though they didn’t have much of a total to defend. Their spinners couldn’t match the impact of KKR’s, and while they did manage to pick up a couple of wickets, it wasn’t enough to put the chasing side under real pressure. In the end, the visitors chased down the total with ease in 17.3 overs.

Earlier in the game, Rajasthan Royals posted a somewhat fighting total with a few of the batters playing cameos, but no one could convert it into a big score, which was the problem for them. Kolkata Knight Riders bowlers were on the money right from the start, and except for Spencer Johnson, who picked up one wicket, every other bowler chipped in with a couple each to restrict the hosts.

Kolkata Knight Riders began steadily, ensuring they didn’t lose any wickets in the Powerplay - a crucial factor in their chase. Quinton de Kock played the anchor role to perfection, even as a couple of wickets fell at the other end. He brought up his maiden IPL fifty for KKR in style, looking in sublime form throughout. His partnership with Angkrish Raghuvanshi, worth over 50 runs, kept RR at bay, and in the end, it was only fitting that De Kock finished the game in style.

The defending champions are off the mark! A dominant performance from Kolkata Knight Riders as they outclassed Rajasthan Royals in all departments, handing them their second straight defeat of the season. QDK stole the spotlight with a brilliant unbeaten 97, sealing the chase in style.

17.36

17.14

Angkrish Raghuvanshi sets himself off for the run but is sent back from almost halfway down the track. The throw from Jofra Archer is fired at the bowling end, but Maheesh Theekshana isn't backing up and it misses the stumps too. The UltraEdge show no spike, and the Ball Tracking shows the impact to be outside off.

16.11lb

Strategic Break! The result is pretty much inevitable here unless a miracle happens and saves the Rajasthan Royals. Quinton de Kock has taken this game out of the hands of the hosts with his fine knock, and he will be hoping to stay till the end and finish things off. Commentary

We are back with KKR's reply! The two umpires make their way out to the middle and are followed by the players of Rajasthan Royals, who burst open after a final huddle and take the field. For KKR, Quinton de Kock is joined by a new opener in Moeen Ali in the absence of Sunil Narine. Jofra Archer has the new ball in hand and will start the proceedings. Away we go!

... THE RUN CHASE ...

With 152 runs to chase, Kolkata Knight Riders will walk out oozing confidence, carrying all the momentum. If the dew sets in, batting should be a breeze, but if conditions remain dry, the Rajasthan Royals' bowlers will have to strike early and exploit any lingering assistance to stay in the hunt. A fascinating chase awaits. Stay tuned for KKR’s reply!

Varun Chakaravarthy from Kolkata Knight Riders is in for a quick chat. He says that the wicket was holding up a bit, and he used the lengths correctly to get those wickets. Adds that it is great to bowl with Moeen Ali and that he bowled pretty well today. Adds that Moeen didn’t know he was playing this match and he had to turn up quickly just before the start of the match. Mentions that he is happy with the score and feels that this is not the same pitch which is at Eden Gardens, so the smart batting will get them past the score. States that Riyan Parag was looking in good touch, so he thought to pitch up a bit fuller and relied on the pitch to offer some help.

But just when the Rajasthan Royals looked set to accelerate, the game flipped on its head! The introduction of spin triggered a dramatic collapse, as RR tumbled from a promising 67/1 to a shocking 82/5 in the blink of an eye. The KKR bowlers turned up the heat, tightened the screws, and gave nothing away, making run-scoring a nightmare in the middle overs. Dhruv Jurel fought valiantly, halting the free fall with crucial stands alongside Shubham Dubey and Shimron Hetmyer, but once he departed, RR’s innings unravelled completely. It was a stellar team effort, with every bowler stepping up! Apart from Spencer Johnson, who chipped in with a crucial wicket, all other KKR bowlers bagged two scalps each.

Put in to bat first, Yashasvi Jaiswal looked a touch out of rhythm but managed to get going alongside Sanju Samson in what seemed like a watchful approach to gauge the conditions. However, Vaibhav Arora struck early, cleaning up Samson and handing KKR a crucial breakthrough. That brought skipper Riyan Parag to the crease, and together with Jaiswal, the duo steadied the ship with a solid partnership, ensuring RR ended the Powerplay strongly at 54/1.

A sensational bowling display from Kolkata Knight Riders has put them in the driver's seat, restricting Rajasthan Royals to a modest 151/9! In a tournament filled with high-scoring thrillers, the Guwahati pitch threw in a twist, playing slightly two-paced and offering assistance to the bowlers, setting the stage for a gripping second half.

OUT! CAUGHT! The struggle for Shubham Dubey comes to an end, and Vaibhav Arora gets his second wicket to conclude his spell for the game. He goes short and outside off, Shubham Dubey looks to swat it on the off side, but the ball sticks to the surface and comes a bit late. He ends up hitting it straight down the throat of Andre Russell at deep point, who takes a simple catch.

13.31

FOUR! Dhruv Jurel is living dangerously at the moment and KKR wouldn't mind this one bit! Hard length, on off, Dhruv Jurel stands tall and swivels for the pull. Gets an underedge that falls past the leg stump and beats Quinton de Kock to his other side this time for another boundary.

13.14

FOUR! Almost a wicket just after the break! Harshit Rana digs it short of a length, on off, Dhruv Jurel angles his bat face and plays it very late than he would have hoped for. Gets it to the right of the leaping Quinton de Kock and finds the fence in a streaky way.

STRATEGIC BREAK! The spinners of Kolkata Knight Riders have been brilliant so far with their lengths and varied pace as they are attacking the stumps most of the time and have picked up four wickets together. Moeen Ali came in in place of Sunil Narine today, and he made an impact straight away. KKR are cruising here as the half side of Rajasthan Royals are back in the hut, and they were prompted to use their impact sub player Shubham Dubey. A couple more wickets will make this one-sided for KKR. On the other hand, from the start to now, the batters of RR have failed to apply themselves to play out on this surface, which has some grip and turn. If this duo of Dhruv Jurel and Shubham Dubey will bat out as much as they can, then they can help RR post a defendable total. An interesting final passage of play of this first inning is ahead of us. With that, Vaibhav Arora comes back into the attack.

OUT! CAUHT! Kolkata Knight Riders are all over Rajasthan Royals here as they pick up the fourth wicket, and the promotion of Wanindu Hasaranga hasn't worked for RR! Varun Chakaravarthy picks up his second wicket as he bowls it on the dragged length and around off, a bit quicker. Wanindu Hasaranga gives himself room by clearing out his front leg and looks to pull it to the leg side. He miscues it off the toe end of the bat, and the ball goes towards extra cover where Ajinkya Rahane takes a simple catch. Rajasthan Royals are 76/4.

9.41

Just falls short! Varun keeps it slow and fuller, into the line of the stumps, Nitish Rana goes for a reverse sweep but gets a top edge instead. Strategic Break! The spinners have given the upper hand to Kolkata Knight Riders with a couple of big wickets in quick succession. They will be looking to build on it and put even more pressure on the middle order of RR. The Royals need to build up a partnership here and avoid losing more wickets at the moment or else they could be in danger of getting bundled out for a below-par total. Also, surprisingly, Wanindu Hasaranga gets a promotion and is the next man in.

The replacement of Sunil Narine today, Moeen Ali picks up a wicket here as he gives flight to the ball and pitches it up, around off and middle. Yashasvi Jaiswal looks to take him on as he dances down the track and lofts it. He doesn't reach the pitch of the ball and mistimes it off the toe end of the bat down to long on. We are all set to begin! The crowd has come in numbers in Guwahati to support their home boy, Riyan Parag's Rajasthan Royals, but there are also some patches of purple for the Kolkata Knight Riders as well. We can see the KKR players in a huddle, and then they spread out to take their respective field positions. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson are the two openers for RR. Spencer Johnson has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

Andre Russell from Kolkata Knight Riders is in for a quick chat. He says coming into the season as the defending champions feels nice but adds a bit of pressure right from the start but is a great seat to be in. Mentions that the games come thick and fast and they will have to make necessary changes along the way. States that they are putting in effort in the training and they have looked at how they can improve from the first game and are excited. Says he gets enough time to assess the conditions and based on that decides how to play.

Impact Players for Rajasthan Royals - Kunal Singh Rathore, Shubham Dubey, Akash Madhwal, Kumar Kartikeya, Kwena Maphaka.

Rajasthan Royals (Playing XI) - Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Nitish Rana, Riyan Parag (C), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Shimron Hetmyer, Wanindu Hasaranga (In place of Fazalhaq Farooqi), Jofra Archer, Maheesh Theekshana, Tushar Deshpande, Sandeep Sharma.

Impact Players for Kolkata Knight Riders - Anrich Nortje, Manish Pandey, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Anukul Roy, Luvnith Sisodia.

Kolkata Knight Riders (Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock (WK), Venkatesh Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane (C), Rinku Singh, Moeen Ali (In place of Sunil Narine), Andre Russell, Ramandeep Singh, Spencer Johnson, Vaibhav Arora, Harshit Rana, Varun Chakaravarthy.

Riyan Parag, the captain of Rajasthan Royals, says that he is very proud and humbled to lead the franchise at his home ground. Adds that there were a lot of positives in the last game as the middle order stepped up. Informs that Wanindu Hasaranga comes in the team for Fazalhaq Farooqi.

The skipper of Kolkata Knight Riders, Ajinkya Rahane, says that they are going to bowl first as the wicket looks really good. They are here for the first time, and they want to have an idea of the pitch, and obviously, the dew factor is also there in making his decision to bowl first. Adds that the discussion was about being positive after that loss in the first game and that they want to be fearless and that there is an opportunity for everyone in each match to do well. Mentions that he doesn’t look at the stats that much and just wants to contribute to the team’s success as much as he can. Informs that Sunil Narine misses out as he is not feeling well, and Moeen Ali comes in place of him.

TOSS - The coin lands in favour of Ajinkya Rahane and Kolkata Knight Riders have elected to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Daren Ganga is joined by Shane Watson for the pitch analysis. Daren says there have been only 4 games at this venue and mentions that the straight boundary is 76 meters while the square boundaries are equidistant at 64 meters. Watson joins in and says that spin will play a role here and the pitch looks dry and does not have a lot of grass. Adds that the average score here since 2021 is 163 runs and that indicates that the wickets tend to slow out a bit and spin will play a crucial role. Daren concludes that dew could play a big factor too.

With a high-scoring surface expected and relatively small boundaries in Guwahati, bowlers from both sides will have to be on their toes. The conditions favor chasing, especially considering the carnage in the previous matches on similar pitches. Both teams might make tactical changes to strengthen their weak areas. Can KKR’s batting fire at full throttle, or will Rajasthan’s bowlers redeem themselves? A lot of questions will be answered soon! Stay tuned as we bring you the toss update and team announcements!

For RR, the absence of Jos Buttler is a massive blow. The Englishman was a pillar at the top, and his void hasn’t yet been filled. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper-for-now Riyan Parag will look to take charge alongside Sanju Samson, who played a solid knock in their previous match. Dhruv Jurel also impressed with a quire fire fifty, but Rajasthan’s major concern lies in their bowling. Their first match saw them concede a record-breaking 286 runs against SRH, with their star pacer Jofra Archer enduring a nightmare outing, the most expensive spell in IPL history. This team needs a turnaround, which will depend on their bowlers stepping up. They have the young talent, but execution will be key tonight.

KKR kicked off their season against RCB but fell short, failing to post a competitive total. While skipper Ajinkya Rahane led from the front with a blazing half-century, the rest of the batting unit struggled to get going. Big names like Andre Russell, Rinku Singh, and Venkatesh Iyer couldn’t fire, exposing some concerns in KKR’s middle order. Their bowling also lacked penetration, with Sunil Narine being the only standout performer that day. However, KKR have the resources to bounce back. Russell and Rinku are known for their finishing ability, and Varun Chakaravarthy, alongside Narine, provides a lethal spin duo. The challenge for KKR and Rahane will be to ensure their bowlers can restrict the opposition, especially on a batting-friendly surface, and then have their power hitters firing.

Hello and welcome to the sixth match of the Indian Premier League 2025, coming to you from the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, where the Rajasthan Royals will take on the Kolkata Knight Riders. These two sides have been among the most consistent performers in recent couple of years, regularly making it to the playoffs. While KKR enter this season as the defending champions, the RR are still in search of their second title since the inaugural season in 2008 when they won it. Both teams started their campaign with a loss, making this a crucial match to bounce back and build momentum. With firepower on both sides and plenty at stake, expect an intense battle under the floodlights tonight!

... MATCH DAY ...

The Indian Premier League 2025 has exploded into action, and now we enter the second round of matches with a blockbuster clash! Rajasthan Royals and the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders go head-to-head at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, both desperate to get their first points on the board after opening-game defeats. This is more than just a game - it’s a battle of redemption! KKR stumbled at home against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, exposing their vulnerable middle order. Sunil Narine was his usual destructive self at the top, lighting up Eden Gardens with some audacious stroke play. But it was skipper Ajinkya Rahane who stole the show with a classy half-century, reminding everyone of his undeniable quality. However, the Knights need more from their big names. Quinton de Kock, a proven match-winner, needs to step up, while the trio of Andre Russell, Rinku Singh, and Ramandeep Singh have the firepower to tear any bowling attack apart. If they all click together - good luck stopping them! The bowling attack, though, remains a work in progress. Harshit Rana has risen to stardom, making a dream debut for India across all formats, but he needs support. The overseas quicks either Spencer Johnson or Anrich Nortje bring pace and aggression, while Vaibhav Arora needs to find consistency. But KKR’s real strength lies in their spin twins - Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy. Their mystery spin can be a nightmare for batters, and if needed, Moeen Ali is another ace up their sleeve. Finding the perfect balance will be key for the defending champions. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals had an unforgettable opening match - unfortunately, for all the wrong reasons. Sunrisers Hyderabad unleashed mayhem, racking up 286 runs, the second-highest total in IPL history. Jofra Archer bore the brunt of the assault, conceding the most expensive spell ever. But champions rise from adversity, and Archer will be raring to silence the doubters. Tushar Deshpande’s clever variations were the only saving grace, while Sandeep Sharma and Maheesh Theekshana will have to step up. Fazalhaq Farooqi, with his ability to swing the new ball, could be a game-changer. Despite the carnage, RR’s batters showed immense fight. Sanju Samson played a scintillating knock, while Dhruv Jurel’s breathtaking 70 proved he’s one to watch. Shimron Hetmyer flexed his muscles, and Shubham Dubey played some eye-catching strokes to reduce the margin of defeat to just 44 runs - expect more fireworks from him. Stand-in captain Riyan Parag and Nitish Rana will be itching to make an impact, especially Rana, who would love nothing more than to shine against his former franchise. Recent history favors Rajasthan, with two wins in their last three encounters, but their record at this venue isn’t great. With both teams stacked with match-winners and hungry for redemption, this has all the ingredients of a classic IPL thriller. Fireworks are guaranteed - who will have the last laugh?
