Commentary

Right then, Match 2 of the 2025 Indian Premier League season is done, but lots of action to look forward to as it is a doubleheader day. The next game is dubbed as the 'IPL El Clásico.' Yes, you guessed it right, Chennai Super Kings take on Mumbai Indians at Chepauk and you can simply switch tabs and catch our coverage of that game. Cheers!

Ishan Kishan is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his sensational century. Kishan starts by saying that to be honest, he was nervous but looking at the score and the team, he got a lot of confidence from the skipper and everyone else and enjoyed his time out in the middle. Mentions that he got a good chunk of time to prepare for the season and he is feeling confident and credit goes to his own personal practice as well. Adds that the likes of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head set things up so well, that you can even relax and get your eye in. Mentions that it is almost impossible to get this sort of a total in each and every game but it is still about playing your own game.

Pat Cummins, the skipper of Sunrisers Hyderabad says that he wouldn't want to bowl to his own batting lineup and getting 280-odd is unreal. Mentions that you know you are going to go for runs and once you have such a big score on board, one solid over with the ball will do the job for the bowling side. Adds that they have a core group of players and even after losing a couple of big names, the likes of Ishan Kishan have come in and stayed true to their blueprint. Mentions that the preparations have been amazing and the coaches have been here for 3-4 weeks, getting everything set for the players and they hope to continue in the same way.

The Presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, the stand-in captain for RR, Riyan Parag, won the toss and put SRH into bat. The home side didn't waste any time in hiring their strides and even after losing Abhishek Sharma inside the Powerplay, they were absolutely flying. Travis Head notched up a half century before Ishan Kishan took matters into his own hands and went on to score the fastest ton on franchise debut in the IPL. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen played stellar cameos as SRH notched up 286 huge runs. With the ball for RR, it was Tushar Deshpande who really fought hard and ended up with 3 wickets.

Harshal Patel, SRH's death-over specialist bowler, is now down for a chat. Harshal says that he i pretty happy with his performance and reckons they executed things well with the ball, barring a few overs and when you have about 290 on board, the game becomes a bit easier. Mentions that the coaches don't believe too much in talking and they tried to bowl defensively with the slower balls and yorkers. Adds that there's a fine line between what is attacking bowling and what is defensive bowling and there will be times when they will need to go hard at the stumps. Adds that no ground is easy for the bowlers in the IPL but especially this ground and the mindset of the batter has become that much more aggressive as well.

Riyan Parag, the captain of Rajasthan Royals is down for a chat. He says that it was a tough outing as expected and reckons that they could have executed better with the ball and will have a chat about it later on. Adds that he feels it was the right decision to bowl first and it was just about executing those deliveries and feels they could have restricted them to about 220-240. Mentions that the batting looked great and thinks that they will be taking quite a few positives from this game. Adds that they take the learnings from a game, whether they win or lose and move on.

It was always going to be a daunting task for Rajasthan Royals to chase down 287 runs and even though they got 16 runs in the very first over, things got out of hand quickly and they lost 3 wickets in just 4.1 overs. Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel though fought back hard and brought new life into the chase with a 111-run stand. However, the pair got out in quick succession leaving the pack a bit too much to do. Shimron Hetmyer and Shubham Dubey did put on a proper fight with a quickfire 80-run stand and yet it was only good to salvage the net run rate somewhat.

After scoring a breathtaking 286 runs in 20 overs, all SRH needed was early wickets and they got just that. Simarjeet Singh showed good pace and got two wickets in his first over before Mohammad Shami opened his account for his new franchise as well. It was then a phase of endurance for the home side and they did decently to soak up the pressure and get in a couple of quiet overs. The likes of Harshal Patel and Adam Zampa then returned to pick up a wicket each of the set batters and that just sealed the game then and there for SRH. Even though the others received a bit of tap towards the end, SRH managed to win by over 40 runs.

Wow, what a run-fest we have witnessed here, 528 runs being scored across the game in 40 overs but in the end, it is the home side that has come out on top. Sunrisers Hyderabad have brought the blueprint from the last season into IPL 2025 and have started off with a solid win as well. Rajasthan Royals fought valiantly with the bat but it was a mountain just too high for them to climb.

Oh, deary me! Ishan Kishan seems to have got his left knee stuck in the turf on the last ball and seems to be in some pain. He does go off the field to receive attention from the physio and hopefully, he is fine.

Commentary

We are back for the run chase! The umpires are back out in the middle as the players of SRH can also be seen making their way out to the field of play. Rajasthan Royals have used the Impact Player sub to bring on Sanju Samson in place of Fazalhaq Farooqi and he will open the innings alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. Mohammad Shami will take the new ball for SRH.

... The Run Chase ...

It was an innings to forget for Rajasthan Royals, as their bowling unit endured a nightmare outing, with Jofra Archer having the toughest day, conceding a staggering 76 runs in his four overs. While most bowlers struggled to contain SRH’s relentless onslaught, Tushar Deshpande emerged as a rare bright spot, picking up three crucial wickets, while Maheesh Theekshana chipped in with two key breakthroughs at vital moments. However, what will sting the most is their inability to sustain any pressure or pose enough challenges for the batters, allowing every incoming player to settle in and unleash a carnage of his own. Now faced with a mountain of a chase, Rajasthan Royals will need an extraordinary batting effort to pull off something historic. With the pressure of an enormous target looming, they will have to play out of their skins to stay in the contest. Their response is coming up shortly.

The man of the moment, Ishan Kishan is in for a quick chat. He says that he feels good to get the ton this season as he missed out last season and hopes to get a few more innings like this in this season. Adds that the skipper and the coaching staff have given them the freedom and that is the confidence that every player needs. Adds that the way the openers started, it gave a lot of confidence to the rest of the batters and reckons that the pitch was really good and they tried to get the opposition under pressure. Mentions that the bowlers need to keep things simple and not panicking and just see how it goes.

Travis Head’s blistering half-century eventually came to an end courtesy of Tushar Deshpande, offering Rajasthan Royals a much-needed breakthrough. However, there was no stopping Kishan, who continued the onslaught with unwavering aggression. He found valuable support first in Nitish Kumar Reddy and later in Heinrich Klaasen, who both played fiery cameos. Kishan’s breathtaking century off just 45 balls propelled Sunrisers Hyderabad to an almost unimaginable total, setting an enormous challenge for Rajasthan Royals.

Riyan Parag’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss quickly backfired as SRH’s explosive opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head came out swinging from ball one. While Maheesh Theekshana managed to provide a brief moment of relief by dismissing Abhishek at a crucial juncture, it did little to halt the carnage. What followed was sheer destruction, as Head and Ishan Kishan tore into the RR attack, racking up 94 runs inside the Powerplay and leaving their opponents shell-shocked.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have delivered a masterclass in power-hitting, launching their campaign in the most dominant fashion possible with a colossal total of 286 runs at the end of the first innings. This is exactly the kind of statement they would have wanted to make, mirroring the ruthless intent they displayed last season.

FOUR! Ishan Kishan with a classy touch to end the first innings here. Full and wide from Tushar Deshpande and gets it spot on but Kishan does even better to just reach out and control the squeezed shot as the ball rolls away into the deep third fence. Sunrisers Hyderabad finish with 286/6 on the board, missing their own highest-ever IPL total by a solitary run.

19.52

Top effort from Shubham Dubey but the ball just lands short! Full and on off, it turns out to be a low full toss and Kishan slices it up and over the cover region. Dubey rushes in and dives and manages to get his body behind the ball, keeping it down to a brace.

19.41lb

No hat-trick! A slower bumper, not all that short and at the body, Pat Cummins gets in an awkward position and the ball goes off his body toward fine leg for a leg bye.

Pat Cummins walks in next and will face the Hat-Trick ball from Tushar Deshpande.

19.3W

OUT! CAUGHT! That should have been put away by Abhinav Manohar but instead, Tushar Deshpande will be on a hat-trick here. Deshpande misses the mark with the yorker and serves a juicy full toss on middle, Manohar gets under it and lifts it right up in the sky towards long on where Riyan Parag takes another regulation catch. Deshpande just bringing some momentum back for RR.

Abhinav Manohar walks in at number 7 for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

19.2W

OUT! CAUGHT! Taken this time around! Another short ball from Tushar Deshpande and again, Aniket Verma looks to take it on. Verma is hurried and neds up pulling it high down to deep backward square leg. Jofra Archer over there in the deep takes a fine low catch and Deshpande gets his second wicket.

19.16

SIX! Oh, deary me! Fazalhaq Farooqi has made a mess of that one! Tushar Deshpande with a good bumper, right at the batter. Aniket Verma hangs back and pulls it high towards deep mid-wicket where Farooqi spills the catch and the ball lands over the ropes.

Who will bowl the final over? It will be Tushar Deshpande!

Take a bow, Ishan Kishan! What a way to kick start things with his new franchise as Kishan notches up a sensational maiden IPL ton off just 45 balls. This is bowled full and around off, Kishan punches it down the ground and to the left of long off for a couple of runs. Kishan then goes up away in celebration and soaks in all of the applause.

18.56

SIX! Another one! Banged in a bit short and at the bodyline, Ishan Kishan pulls it away well behind square and over the ropes for another biggie.

18.46

SIX! Ishan Kishan sails into the 90s! A full ball, straight and dipping as well, Kishan gets down on one knee and under the ball to swing it up and just over Fazalhaq Farooqi at deep square leg for a biggie.

18.31

Banged in well into the pitch and outside off, Aniket Verma reaches for it and gets it wide of covers for a single.

Aniket Verma walks in at number 6 for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

18.2W

OUT! CAUGHT! Heinrich Klaasen cannot believe it but he has to walk back after a fiery cameo. Sandeep Sharma goes full and lands it near the popping crease on off stump. Klaasen stays back and clears the front leg before just swatting it down the ground. The ball gets lofted down to long on where Riyan Parag takes a simple catch. Klaasen departs for 34 off 14.

18.12

Good length, angled wide outside off, Heinrich Klaasen sits down and gets across before sweeping it away wide of deep mid-wicket for a couple of runs.

FOUR! Well controlled in the end! Slower one, back of a length and outside off, Kishan waits back to cut and does so fine enough of deep backward point. 23 off the over and Jofra Archer ends with 76 runs from his 4 overs!

17.51

Gets this one into the blockhole on off, Heinrich Klaasen looks to swing it away but gets an inside edge onto the pads. The batters scamper through for a run though.

17.44

FOUR! Just wide! Archer brings out the back-of-the-hand slower ball now and bowls it into the pitch over off, Heinrich Klaasen holds still and powers it up and away wide of long off where the fielder puts in a dispairing dive but can't reach it. 250 up for SRH!

17.34

FOUR! Even the fortunes favoring SRH here! Full and wide, almost lands the perfect wide yorker but Heinrich Klaasen reaches out and toe-ends it wide of the keeper and into the vacant deep third fence. 14 off the over already!

17.24

FOUR! Made that look so easy did Klaasen! Slower one, into the pitch and around off, Klaasen stays put and just whacks it flat over extra cover for a boundary.

17.11

Pitched up, full and outside off, Ishan Kishan lofts it down to long off where the catch is taken but it won't count. Just the single then.

NO BALL AND FOUR BYES! Oh, that's completely slipped out of Archer's hand and he will get a warning now. Looks for the quick yorker but ends up being a beamer that nearly takes out Ishan Kishan. The keeper also gets taken aback and the ball goes through for four extra runs as well. Free Hit coming up...

The replay shows the ball to be on the guideline and some part of it is withing the line and hence the onfield call is asked to be overturned to a fair delivery.

Oh, deary me! Ishan Kishan seems to have got his left knee stuck in the turf on the last ball and seems to be in some pain. He does go off the field to receive attention from the physio and hopefully, he is fine.

Strategic Break! While there was a glimmer of hope for Rajasthan Royals when Dhruv Jurel and Sanju Samson were building a strong partnership, their quick dismissals have all but sealed the game in SRH’s favour. With 118 runs needed off the last five overs, the equation looks nearly impossible, and Rajasthan Royals will need something truly extraordinary to turn this around. The pressure is mounting, and unless a miraculous late surge unfolds, SRH looks well on course to wrap up a commanding victory.

Zips through and that's yet another fine over for the bowling side, just 3 off it and only 7 runs in the last 2 overs. Cummins goes quick now and bowls it full and wide, flirting with the tramline. Jurel goes after it but misses and no wide is called either and Jurel isn't pleased. RR don't review it though.

Uh oh, Mohammad Shami seems to have a cut on his left hand and is heading out of the field.

Strategic break! Rajasthan Royals have done decently well with regards to the scoring rate and are going at just under 12 runs per over but with the initial rate being over 14 runs an over, they need to keep this up and then some more. However, SRH won't be much bothered and continue to look for wickets as they already have picked up 3 wickets and a couple more in the next few overs will apply a serious amount of pressure on the RR middle order. Let's see how the middle phase pans out as we are starting to see just a bit of turn here. Heinrich Klaasen collects the ball quickly to his right and breaks the bails but Samson just about manages to drop his back foot in the crease at the right time.

Is that stumped? Lovely flight from Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen whips off the bails in a flash. The on-field umpires do go upstairs and the third umpire is called in.

Strategic break! Despite losing a few wickets along the way, Sunrisers Hyderabad have ensured they keep their foot firmly on the accelerator. Ishan Kishan is leading the charge with a relentless onslaught, pushing his side toward a massive total. With four overs still to go and plenty of firepower left in the tank, SRH will be aiming to maximize every scoring opportunity. Rajasthan Royals, on the other hand, have managed to slow things down in phases but haven’t been able to sustain the pressure or put the batters under consistent threat. These final four overs will be crucial for them to pull back some momentum and restrict SRH from posting an even more daunting total. Sandeep Sharma comes back into the attack now.

All in readiness for Match 2 of the 2025 IPL season! The 'Orange Army' is buzzing as the two umpires make their way out to the middle. Riyan Parag can be seen giving his RR troops a final lift in the huddle as they stride onto the field as well. Out comes that hard-hitting duo of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head to open the innings for SRH. Fazalhaq Farooqi the former SRH man, has the new ball in hand for his new franchise and is raring to go. Let's play...

Travis Head, SRH's explosive opener, is down for a chat. He starts by saying that it feels good to be back and hopes that he can replicate the same as last season. Says that he is enjoying batting with Abhishek Sharma and says that he has gotten even better in the last 12 months and loves to watch him play from the other end. Mentions that they have had a relaxed environment last season and it is similar this season as well and they know it's not about a single person carrying the team but everyone having their day. Says that he has been practicing over the past few days but it is a brutal game. However, if it doesn't come off, then he will try to stay relaxed.

With SRH’s explosive firepower up against RR’s balanced squad, this promises to be a thrilling contest as both teams aim to start their campaign on a winning note. Stay tuned as the toss and team updates are just moments away.

Rajasthan Royals enter this season with a slightly revamped squad, but their core remains strong. With Sanju Samson managing a finger injury, he is expected to feature as an impact substitute for the first three games, while Riyan Parag takes on the leadership role. Yashasvi Jaiswal will be pivotal at the top, carrying the responsibility of setting a strong foundation. The middle order is bolstered by Nitish Rana, Dhruv Jurel and Shimron Hetmyer, all capable of taking the game away from the opposition. Their bowling unit has undergone significant changes, with Jofra Archer leading the pace attack and the spin duo of Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana adding depth to their arsenal.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have built a reputation for their aggressive batting approach, and this season promises to be no different. With Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head at the top, they have a pair that can dismantle any bowling attack from the outset. The addition of Ishan Kishan further strengthens an already formidable batting lineup, making them even more dangerous. On the bowling front, the experience of Pat Cummins, combined with the skill of Mohammad Shami and Harshal Patel, gives SRH a well-rounded attack capable of delivering under pressure.

Hello and a warm welcome to the second match of the 18th season of the Indian Premier League. After a strong showing in the previous edition, Sunrisers Hyderabad are set to take on the ever-consistent Rajasthan Royals at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, a venue known for producing high-scoring thrillers. Both teams are brimming with match-winners, setting the stage for an electrifying contest to kick off this double-header Sunday.

... MATCH DAY ...

The festival of cricket that we all dearly know by the name of Indian Premier League is back with a bang for its 18th season in 2025 and the teams, along with the fans worldwide, will be gearing up for a couple of months of entertaining cricketing action. In Match 2 of IPL 2025, last season's runners-up Sunrisers Hyderabad take on Rajasthan Royals at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in what will also be the first game of the first double-header of the season. Two teams that have done well in recent seasons of the IPL, with SRH reaching new heights in terms of putting up colossal total on the board and after a couple of seasons in the playoffs, RR narrowly missed out on a top 4 finish last time around and will be looking to get back into the title mix. Let's talk a bit more about how these two teams fared in the mega auction that was held a few months prior to the 2025 season. SRH retained the core group of skipper Pat Cummins, Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy that really propelled them into the summit clash of 2025. They let go of lead pacer Bhuveneshwar Kumar, a mainstay of the side for so many years and have roped in the likes of Mohammad Shami and Harshal Patel as experienced replacements. Ishan Kishan is another name that SRH have added to the mix to bolster that already hard-hitting batting lineup but former skipper Aiden Markram was let go before the auction. They do lack a bit with regards to finger spinners, but have a couple of seasoned leggies in the form of Adam Zampa and Rahul Chahar to get the job done. It will be interesting to see whether the likes of Kamindu Mendis and Wiaan Mulder who have done well in recent times, get a game in ahead of the other seasoned overseas campaigners. Rajasthan Royals, on the other hand, also retained their skipper Sanju Samson along with the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel, making for a strong Indian batting core. However, their fine bowling attack has now been overhauled with the likes of Ashwin, Boult, and Chahal all moving on to different teams. They have replaced that attack with the likes of Jofra Archer, Tushar Deshpande, the Lankan spin duo of Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga along with Sandeep Sharma who was already there from the last season. Shimron Hetmyer will also be a part of RR yet again while they look like a well-rounded side on paper, they might be missing a big overseas name on the batting front in the top order. Last season we saw SRH break plenty of batting records and most of them were at their home venue, so we can expect a high-scoring affair but given it is a day game, there might not be much difference in the two innings. Who do you think will start their season with a win? Will it be Sunrisers Hyderabad? Or will it be Rajasthan Royals to spoil the party for the home team?
